- 3 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 celery stalk or 1/4 onion, finely chopped
- 1 tsp lemon juice or vinegar
- 4 slices bread
- 4 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- Salt and pepper
How to cook tuna melt step by step
- Mix the tuna with the mayonnaise, celery or onion, lemon juice, salt and pepper.
- Butter the outside faces of all four bread slices.
- Build each sandwich butter-side out: cheese, tuna, cheese, bread.
- Cook in a skillet over medium-low for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until golden and melted.
- Cut in half and eat while the cheese is still stretchy.
Chef's tips
- Medium-low heat gives the cheese time to melt before the bread darkens.
- A spoon of pickle relish or mustard wakes the whole thing up.
