Ingredients
- 2 slices bread
- 2 oz (55 g) cheese, grated or thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp softened butter or mayonnaise
How to cook grilled cheese step by step
- Spread butter on the outside faces of both bread slices.
- Pile the cheese between them, keeping it away from the very edge.
- Cook in a skillet over medium-low heat, covered, for 3–4 minutes per side.
- Press gently with a spatula and flip once the underside is evenly golden.
- Rest 1 minute before cutting so the cheese sets slightly.
Chef's tips
- Medium-low is the whole trick — high heat burns the bread before the cheese melts.
- Grated cheese melts far faster than slices.
