Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread
  • 2 oz (55 g) cheese, grated or thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp softened butter or mayonnaise

How to cook grilled cheese step by step

  1. Spread butter on the outside faces of both bread slices.
  2. Pile the cheese between them, keeping it away from the very edge.
  3. Cook in a skillet over medium-low heat, covered, for 3–4 minutes per side.
  4. Press gently with a spatula and flip once the underside is evenly golden.
  5. Rest 1 minute before cutting so the cheese sets slightly.

Chef's tips

  • Medium-low is the whole trick — high heat burns the bread before the cheese melts.
  • Grated cheese melts far faster than slices.
